Video podcast: Banana farming in the Canary Islands

Saturday, March 6th, 2021 in: Banana Trade Blog, News

Banana Link spoke recently to Canary Island organic banana farmer, Jorge Hernández, to find out about banana farming in the islands and the challenges banana farmers face in the Spanish Autonomous Community.

We have recorded a video podcast with Jorge which you can watch below – it is in both Spanish and English audio, with Spanish and English subtitles.

Among other things, Jorge talks about banana prices and the marketing of Canary Island bananas, including recent calls for an exemption for Canary Islands farmers from a Spanish law prohibiting selling produce below cost price.

He also talks about the methods of pest and disease control he uses on his farm, the challenges of climate change and what the future looks like for Canary Island banana farming.

We would have liked to talk more about his organic production methods and his water management practices, but we did not have time, so we hope to record another interview with him in the future to discuss these aspects of his farming in more detail.
