With financial support from the GMB trade union, Banana Link has facilitated the provision of care packages for women who lost their jobs due to hurricane damage in Guatemala last year.
The Hurricane devastated farms in Guatemala, destroying production and leading to job losses – 147 in total – many of them women.
With little alternative employment opportunities for women other than cleaning and laundry – which is poorly paid and unstable – many were struggling to make ends meet.
A donation from GMB has meant that the Guatemalan trade union SITRABI (the Izabal Banana Workers’ Union) has been able to provide care packages to a group of 20 women, considered most vulnerable as single mothers and heads of households.
We have been sent the photos below of the care packages being distributed to the women.
