Dear Secretary of State,

I am appalled by the escalating violence towards union leaders and community activists in Guatemala, including the murders of two the Izabal Banana Plantation Workers' Union (SITRABI) officials in the last two months alone.

I am writing to ask that the British Government puts pressure on CICIG (the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala) to respond to the demands of MSICG (the Trade Union, Indigenous and Peasant Movement of Guatemala) for a full investigation into the violence against its members, and the subsequent prosecution of those responsible.

I also ask that the British Ambassador, as the representative of the British government in Guatemala and in partnership with other EC representatives, is active in the fight to put an end to this pattern of rising anti-union violence and institutional impunity in Guatemala.
