2. GENDER EQUITY IN THE BANANA INDUSTRY: A GLOBAL WOMEN'S STRATEGY MEETING (9-10 December 2015)
Fairtrade International, Bonn, GermanyA global strategy meeting on gender equity in the banana industry was funded by Fairtrade Deutschland and hosted by Fairtrade International (FI) in their offices in Bonn on December 9 and 10, 2015. The meeting was coordinated by members of the Working Group on Gender of the World Banana Forum (WBF) and aimed to enable women to collectively develop strategies towards gender equity as part of the broader objective of the WBF to create an industry which is economically, environmentally and socially sustainable.

Fairtrade Deutschland y organizada por Fairtrade International (FI) en sus oficinas en Bonn el 9 y 10 de diciembre del 2015. La reunión fue coordinada por miembros del Grupo de Trabajo sobre Género en el Foro Mundial Bananero (FMB) y tuvo por objetivo facilitar que las mujeres desarrollaran colectivamente estrategias hacia la igualdad de género como parte de un objetivo más amplio de WBF de crear una industria que es económicamente, ambientalmente y socialmente sustentable.

"What are your thoughts on this first meeting on women agro-industrial workers’ rights?
There was a huge turnout of women who work both in the agro-industrial sector as well as and the agri-food sector. They got involved in the different activities and felt part of this project to protect their rights, which was kick-started by SINTRAINAGRO. Those from other departments and regions in Colombia asked us to visit them and to keep them involved in our activities. All in all, it was a wonderful and very rewarding experience..."
4. Colsiba Women's Commitee presentation: Exchange of women's experiences within the framework of the World Banana Forum (24-26th February 2012)
"Throughout history women, as active members of the
labour, social, and political spheres, have made an importa
nt contribution to the development of nations, which as a result has enabled people and governments to double their capital gains. These
historical developments have taken places without a meaningful or significant recognition for the female population. Instead, there
have been recorded violations to fundamental conventions and recommendations regarding equal opportunity as it is delineated by the ILO.
For this reason, and in order to contribute to the improvement and development of the quality of life of banana workers in the agribusiness, the different trade union organizations in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa, have united to form an organization that protects the rights of the more disadvantaged groups..."
"The World Banana Forum Working Group on Gender Equity would like to offer our experience and expertise to support the WBF Working Group 02 in ensuring that gender equity is fully integrated into its various initiatives on the distribution of value, and in particular the various projects related to Living Wages. We believe that gender must be considered in all stages of the development and implementation of these important initiativesto ensure that the realities faced by women banana workers and producers can be fully addressed. We believe that this is an important opportunity for the World Banana Forum to lead the way on gender equity issues within global value chains..."
