Fighting the Banana Wars And Other Fairtrade Battles: How we took on the corporate giants to change the world
by Harriet Lamb

Published by Rider Books on 7th February 2008, £10.99

Only 14 years ago you couldn’t buy a Fairtrade product in Britain.  Today over £300m worth of goods bearing the FAIRTRADE Mark are sold annually, including tea, coffee, bananas, cotton, flowers and even footballs.  At the heart of this revolution in our shops is the Fairtrade Foundation.  Starting small but with big ideas, it has turned a grass-roots movement into a phenomenon of our time – changing not only the way in which corporations deal with their suppliers and how consumers shop on the high street, but also transforming the lives of over 7 million farmers, workers and their families.

In Fighting the Banana Wars and Other Fairtrade Battles, Executive Director of the Fairtrade Foundation in the UK Harriet Lamb relives the dramatic campaigns and successes that have brought Fairtrade to this point, outlines the hurdles still to be overcome and shows what we can all do to help achieve global Fairtrade

El Parque de las Hamacas

las_hamacas_foto.jpg
In 2002, more than 2000 Nicaraguans, all suffering illnesses caused by the chemical DBCP used on banana farms in the 1970s, marched for 2 weeks to the capital, Managua, and hung their hammocks outside the National Assembly. They waited. It was a call for justice, to have their voices heard, but which went largely ignored by the government. The impunity continues while their bodies deteriorate. Learn about "banana republicanism" and take a journey through history with El Parque de las Hamacas.

Only available in spanish.

Pura Vida - a new film by Jan Nimmo

This film takes a journey to the banana and pineapple plantations of Costa Rica to reveal the devastating effect the chemical cocktail used to grow the fruit is having on workers, the neighbouring communities and the environment - and just so we can buy cheap fruit at our local supermarket.
