Another fish-kill in Costa Rica
6th October, Banana Link

Fish killed by a chemical discharge in the Gochen Canal, Limón province, Costa RicaOn 6th October, a chemical discharge provoked a mass fish-kill in the canal of Gochen in the Limón province of Costa Rica. This channel has been contaminated half a dozen times in the last 8 years, but the authorities have never found the guilty party. The SITRAP Union has made an international appeal for help in reporting that environmental damage continues to go unpunished in Costa Rica. As in the past, the pollution has caused communities to be unable to drink their tap water, as well as damaging the livelihood of local fisherfolk and undermining tourism in the Caribbean coastal area.

The union also claims that many of the companies suspected as being at the origin of the agrochemical spillages continue to sell their bananas and pineapples with environmental certifications such as ISO 14001 and Rainforest Alliance.
