Union Sintrainagro has called for an indefinite strike starting next week following
the failure of negotiations over a reform of working practices.
The last such strike took place five years ago and lasted 16 days. Unless some form of consensus is reached over four key points the banana workforce has been called out from Wednesday 22 April. The four points of contention are: methods of
contracting labour, rules and disciplinary procedures, the determination of salary increases and the management of loans and access to social funds. The workforce is also demanding the creation of a fund to assist families affected by violence in the region.
