Floods affect Honduran banana communities
30th October, La Lima and Colon, Northern Honduras

On the tenth anniversary of the most devastating Hurricane to hit Central America in decades, over a thousand banana workers have lost their homes as result of serious flooding in the banana zones of Northern Honduras. The death toll was reported to have reached 18 last week, as people were trapped by rivers rising after torrential rains. In one incident reported by the Honduran Agroindustrial Workers' Union Coordinating Body COSIBAH over 80 women workers had to be rescued by helicopters after their buses got caught in rapidly rising flood waters from the river Aguan as they were leaving the banana packhouse where they work. Some workers said that the Dole Food subsidiary that owns Las Isletas should have been shown more concern for people's fate.
