Tesco Backs Supermarket 'Tsar' Call
21 July 2008, www.thegrocer.co.uk

Tesco has backed calls for the creation of an independent supermarket ‘tsar’ to oversee legislation of the UK’s leading grocers, according to weekend reports.  The news comes after it emerged last month that retailers Asda and Morrisons were considering launching appeals against proposed measures covering areas including the treatment of suppliers and the use of controlled land.  The proposals followed a Competition Commission report in April. "Unless everyone in the industry can agree to sign up to the proposal, we believe that it would require legislation,” a spokesman for Tesco is quoted as saying in the Independent on Sunday. “We work hard to ensure that we have good relations with our suppliers and more than 1,500 of our suppliers have been with us for five years or more."

However, Sainsbury's said: "We believe the creation of an ombudsman to look into relationships between suppliers and retailers is an unnecessary measure and that issues should be addressed through the proposed changes to the existing code of practice."
