Ecuadorian Young Activist at CIVICUS Youth Assembly

May 2007

In May 2007 a young delegate, Tania Auxiliara Mieles, represented our Ecuadorian trade union partner FENACLE at the CIVICUS Youth and World Assemblies, held in Glasgow. The CIVICUS - World Alliance for Citizen Participation - Youth Assembly was the first of its kind and was attended by 150 young delegates, representing civil society organisations from all over the world. The event was a chance for young people to share experiences and participate in educational workshops on leadership, citizenship, poverty reduction, accountability and globalisation.

Tania assisted Banana Link in the facilitation of a workshop; “Bananas Unpeeled: Solidarity and Accountability along the Supply Chain”; attended by 35 of the young delegates, where Tania explained the realities for young banana workers in Ecuador, the work FENACLE is doing through its youth programme to improve these conditions and the role of international solidarity in supporting these improvements through the Banana Link facilitated Union to Union programme.

Tania’s accounts were complimented by the participation of young trade union activist and Amicus member, Fazia Hussein, who described her experiences of a Banana Link co-ordinated youth delegation visit to Costa Rica and the follow up solidarity work she has engaged in the UK to raise money and support the FENACLE Youth Programme in Ecuador.

Following the two day Youth Assembly the young delegates participated in the CIVICUS World Assembly, with the theme of Acting Together for a Just World: Accountability; Delivering Results. This was attended by 600 civil society activists from over 100 countries, and achieved their target of 50% female participation and 30% youth participation. At the World Assembly Tania and the other young delegates attended training workshops on corporate, government, media, CSO and global institution accountability whilst also attending a live BBC World Debate, “Aid- Is it Working?”.

At both the Youth and World Assemblies Tania had the opportunity to meet civil society activists from all over the world and is now a member of the CIVCUS Youth Network, enabling these active youth to share their experiences and mobilise young people from all over the world.
