Below is an urgent action from FENACLE, the trade union federation leading the drive to organise in Ecuador where less than 1% of workers are unionised and wages, benefits and conditions are some of the very worst in the banana industry.
On 30th October, the Noboa Corporation fired 333 workers from four plantations in Los R?s province: Loma Larga, Bananera del Ecuador, Bananera Las Mercedes and Rio Ventana. Their only 'crime' was to have attended workshops organised by trade union federation FENACLE. They had not even started trying to form a union. As is the case in all Noboa plantations, the direct employers are sub-contracting companies set up by the mother company to render trade union organisation difficult or impossible. Please denounce this latest firing: 1) As an illegal violation of workers' fundamental right to freedom of association 2) Ask for immediate reinstatement of all the workers concerned 3) Ask the Labour Minister to try and speed up new legislation on subcontractors You could also add that you will be passing this on to friends and family. Please send urgent messages denouncing this latest abuse of banana workers' basic rights to: Xavier Monge, Corporaci?
